Recently, we did an on-site visit to a hotel that is having all kinds of issues with their sound quality. A team of designers painstakingly picked every knickknack, placed specific books in strategic places, and created a beautiful atmosphere…but they did not give any consideration to the acoustics. We’ve all been in a loud bar, restaurant, or event venue where you can hear every word of the conversation at the table ten spots over. For this particular space, they also use it for events, and at their very first event, several attendees commented on how loud and boomy the room was, making it difficult to hear someone right next to you–not a great experience during a networking event where folks are trying to make connections!

So, we’re going to install ceiling treatments, wall treatments that will be a mix of custom-printed art on acoustic panels, accent colors, and panels that blend with the aesthetic seamlessly. These pieces will not interfere with the visually appealing space, and we’re even putting very affordable panels underneath each table to provide another hidden solution that will help soften the sound.

Perhaps our society places too much emphasis on how things look. Or the designers didn’t think about all the flat surfaces ricocheting and amplifying every word, or wanted to maximize the design budget they were working with. Regardless of how the oversight happened, every space is only as inviting as the sound quality. A space that welcomes long conversations, new connections, and a peaceful, soft sound quality that doesn’t interfere or hinder the experience.

Sound quality also matters at home. The modern trend of super-high ceilings, lofted spaces, and windows everywhere certainly bring a host of acoustic challenges. One of our favorite solutions for rooms like these is to integrate custom art onto acoustic panels so your guests would never know that the piece of art they’re admiring also doubles as an acoustic panel to help mitigate the sound and make for a better listening and viewing experience. And in our custom-built home theaters, the right acoustic treatments take your surround sound setup to the next level.
