With hundreds of commercial and residential projects under their belt, HarmonyAVL+media is focused more than ever on making a positive impact locally.
May 17, 2021—Harmony has long been a trusted name in the custom audio, visual, and lighting systems world, with only a handful of similar businesses existing anywhere in the country. Now, Harmony’s legacy has been passed down to long-time employee and North Carolina native, Tommy Calloway.
“It’s really special to take the reins of an organization that has a trusted reputation and great impact on shaping downtown Asheville’s musical and welcoming vibe,” President/CEO Tommy Calloway says. Their portfolio includes over 70 commercial entertainment spaces created alone during 2+ decades, like working with the iconic Biltmore Estate, CÚRATE, and LEAF Global Arts Headquarters. “Walking into a space that you helped create and is thriving is certainly a treat. We know that what we do can have an impact on the bottom line of any business we work with, and we take that seriously because we are invested in the success of Asheville,” Vice President Shawndra Russell adds.
Harmony recently joined the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Asheville Downtown Association, and BNI, and can’t wait to be more involved in the local community. “We are committed to putting our time, energy, and money into supporting everything local and regional,” Russell explains. Their Re-Grand Opening and Chamber Ribbon Cutting is taking place on Wednesday, June 9 from 4-7pm. Door prizes include the new portable, waterproof, and lightweight Sonos Roam, which moves seamlessly from Wi-Fi to Bluetooth. Tacos from Dirty Gertie’s, beer from Asheville Brewing Company, and a signature “Harmony” drink concocted from Mary Rich’s Spirit Savvy will also be on hand along with samples and a door prize from Stillpoint Wellness. The event will also be an artist’s reception with famed local artist Christopher Holt who currently has an exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art which will round out the evening’s festivities.
Harmony works with residential, commercial, and indoor/outdoor spaces and has a big vision for the future—including putting Asheville on the map as a sound chamber hub, designing and installing Dolby ATMOS surround sound-based aural massage chambers all over the world. They also have an eye on all kinds of fundraisers that directly impact the success of the creatives that make Harmony even exist. “Without great music to hear and amazing shows to watch, we wouldn’t even have clients,” Russell says. They plan to host a monthly fundraiser online with items donated by trusted local companies as a way to cross-promote, and a monthly event such as listening, viewing, and/or tasting ticketed events that help raise money for causes near to their hearts. They also look forward to hosting disc golf tournaments as the entire team has an affinity for this explosive sport with storied North Carolina roots. They recently co-hosted the first annual LEAF disc golf tournament during the LEAF ReTreat with sponsors Ginger’s Revenge, The Grey Eagle, Asheville Brewing Company, French Broad Outfitters, The Great Reset podcast, and their biggest overall winner sponsor, Play It Again Sports, donating some great prizes.
Calloway certainly has an eye for design and sound, with a unique self-created degree from UNC Asheville called Composition for the Theater. “I combined Music, Creative Writing and Theatre to bring a lot of my creative energies into one place. Being both on the technical and the performance side of shows has served me well both in creating Audiovisual content and knowing how to make sure it works properly, too.” He’s also a musician, writer, sound and video designer and comedian. He formed the beloved local comedy troupe, The Feral Chihuahuas, who performed in Asheville and all over the country for 10 years, and was named Comedian of the Year by Mountain Xpress in 2010. Russell has a background in event planning, digital marketing, project management, and user experience, and they have a great team that has a combined 60 years of experience in the industry as AV integrators, musicians, designers, and builders.
